Fur Elise (by Ludwig van Beethoven)
Fur Elise (by Ludwig van Beethoven) Fur Elise aka Bagatelle in A Minor Though originally written in 1810, "Fur Elise" (aka Bagatelle in a minor), was not published until 1865, 40 years after the composer's death. It was believed that this composition was intended for Therese Malfatti, and was supposed to have been entitled "Fur Therese" (For Therese), a woman Beethoven once courted and proposed marriage to. Malfatti declined in accepting Beethoven's invitation, however, and some have hypothesized that this musical manuscript titled was then changed and dedicated to "Elise" instead. Regardless, this evocative composition was inspired by the intense and effusive emotions provoked by love. And it is with this romantic passion which perhaps distinguishes Beethoven from his classical era counterparts. ***Requested by a listener earlier today*** ***Thanks to my listener who requested this, and brought back memories: 9 years old. Part of one of the 1st solo recitals performed at a state college :)***

Andor Földes plays Beethoven Sonata No.24, "À Thérèse"
Andor Földes plays Beethoven Sonata No.24, "À Thérèse" Piano Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp major, op.78, nicknamed "À Thérèse"; composed in 1809. Movements are: - Adagio cantabile, Allegro ma non troppo - Allegro vivace ~~~ Dedicatee of the sonata (composed some five years after Appassionata), Countess Theresa Brunszvik of Korompa was a member of the Hungarian nobility. She was the founder of nursery schools in Hungary, under the Austro-hungarian monarchy on July 1, 1828. Soon the pre-school institution became famous all over Hungary and in 1837, Friedrich Fröbel founded the first "kindergarten" in Germany. She launched the Women's Association in Buda and Pest and initiated an institution for educating women and consistently supported their equality. She was once thought of as a leading contender for being the composer's mysterious "Immortal Beloved". Yet by the time these enigmatic references to a lover had begun to appear in his correspondence and conversation books, Theresa had been out of his life for a couple of years and, indeed, it is she who seems to have been the more disappointed party when their relationship came to nothing in 1809. He, meanwhile, was more besotted with her widowed sister Josephine. Once Beethoven failed to respond to Theresa's love for him, she found solace in caring for disadvantaged children and survived to the age of 86. The composer nevertheless treasured the portrait she gave him on her departure, inscribed with the words : "To the unique genius, to the great artist, to the good man ...

The Rosamunde Quartet play String Quartet in C sharp minor Op. 131 b
The Rosamunde Quartet play String Quartet in C sharp minor Op. 131 b The DVD 'The Rosamunde Quartet: Celibidache's Heritage' is available from www.digitalclassics.co.uk and all major retailers. The Munich-based Rosamunde Quartet made a sensational début in 1992 and swiftly gained an international reputation as a chamber ensemble noted for its individual style and mastery of a broad repertoire. Unusually, the four musicans Andreas Reiner (first violin), Simon Fordham (second violin), Helmut Nicolai (viola) and Anja Lechner (cello) came together after they had individually established successful careers. Up until his death in 1996, maestro Sergiu Celibidache was their mentor, friend and critic in this venture, and he continues to be their inspiration. The quartet emulate his single-minded perfectionism; approach music-making, as he did, from a well-founded understanding; and always remember his impatience if he thought they were just playing notes and not music. This lively and intimate portrait accompanies the ensemble as they rehearse, travel, perform, and also catches each of the musicians off duty. They are seen playing works by both classical and modern composers in sequences which have a contemporary visual impact, and their collaboration with the Argentinean bandoneon master, Dino Saluzzi, is also featured.
