Allegro con spirito Performed by The English Concert Directed by Trevor Pinnock *Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385 was composed in 1782 and is also called the Haffner Symphony. It was commissioned by the Haffners, a prominent Salzburg family, for the occasion of Sigmund Haffner's ennoblement. The Haffner Symphony should not be confused with the Haffner Serenade, another piece Mozart wrote on commission from the same family. The Haffner Serenade, K. 250, is in eight movements and was composed six years earlier in 1776. The Haffner Symphony did not start its life as a symphony, but rather as a serenade to be used as background music for the ennoblement of Sigmund Haffner. The Mozarts knew the Haffners through Sigmund Haffner's father, also Sigmund Haffner, who had been mayor of Salzburg and who had helped them out on their early tours of Europe. The elder Haffner died in 1772, but the families remained in contact. In 1776, the younger Haffner commissioned a serenade for the wedding of Marie Elizabeth Haffner to Franz Xavier Spath. This work became the famous Haffner Serenade which was so successful that, when the younger Sigmund Haffner was to be ennobled, it was only natural that Mozart was called upon to write the music for the occasion. Vladimir Feltsman, fortepiano In a 2006 performance at the Mannes College of Music (NYC), pianist Vladimir Feltsman plays Mozart's Fantasy in c minor, K 475 on his own fortepiano. Modeled after an Anton Walter instrument from Mozart's time, Mr. Feltsman commissioned builder Paul McNulty to construct the fortepiano as a replica of Mozart's own. On September 17th, 2009, Mr. Feltsman will once again play on his own fortepiano when he performs Mozart's Piano Concert No. 27 with the AMERICAN CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA. He'll open the ACO's season at the new Alice Tully Hall; the concert begins at 8:00 pm, and includes a pre-concert lecture by Director Thomas Crawford at 7:00 pm. Adagio Cantabile Performed by Le Concert des Nations Directed by Jordi Savall *"A Musical Joke" is a composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; the composer entered it in his Verzeichnis aller meiner Werke ('Catalogue of all my Works') on June 14, 1787. The music is intentionally written to be funny, being liberally sprinkled with obtrusively clumsy, mechanical and over-repetitive composition, together with passages evidently designed to mimic the effects of inaccurate notation and inept performance. Commentators have opined that the piece's purpose is satirical -- that "[its] harmonic and rhythmic gaffes serve to parody the work of incompetent composers" -- though Mozart himself is not known to have revealed his actual intentions. The piece consists of four movements, using forms shared with many other classical divertimenti. Nevertheless, the music has potential to appeal to the average audience of that time as a comedy, including: 1. Use of asymmetrical phrasing, or not phrasing by four measure groups, at the beginning of the first movement, which is very uncommon for the classical period. 2. Use of secondary dominants where subdominant chords are just fair. 3. The use of discords in the French horns, satirizing the incompetence of the copyist, or the hornist grabbing the wrong crook. 4.
