While it is often presented as a single work in six movements, the individual pieces were conceived as a set of individual works. Vltava, also known by its German name Die Moldau (or The Moldau), was composed between 20 November and 8 December 1874 and was premiered on 4 April 1875. It is about 12 minutes long, and is in the key of E minor. In this piece, Smetana uses tone painting to evoke the sounds of one of Bohemia's great rivers. Deutsche Grammophon (LPEM 19 471) Die Komposition schildert den Lauf der Moldau, angefangen bei den beiden kleinen Quellen, der kühlen und der warmen Moldau, über die Vereinigung der beiden Bächlein zu einem Fluss, den Lauf der Moldau durch Wälder und Fluren, durch Landschaften, wo gerade eine Bauernhochzeit gefeiert wird, beim nächtlichen Mondschein tanzen die Nymphen ihren Reigen. Auf den nahen Felsen ragen stolze Burgen, Schlösser und Ruinen empor. Die Moldau wirbelt in den Johannisstromschnellen; im breiten Zug fließt sie weiter gegen Prag, am Vyšehrad vorbei, und in majestätischem Lauf entschwindet sie in der Ferne schließlich in der Elbe.

BEDŘICH SMETANA - VLTAVA Vltava je druhá symfonická báseň z cyklu Má vlast skladatele Bedřicha Smetany. Popisuje tok nejdelší české řeky -- Vltavy. Vltava vznikla mezi 20. listopadem a 8. prosincem roku 1874. Premiéru měla 4. dubna 1875. Sám Smetana o Vltavě řekl: Skladba líčí běh Vltavy, začínaje od prvních obou praménků, Teplá a Studená Vltava, spojení obou potůčků do jednoho proudu; pak tok Vltavy v hájích a po lučinách, krajinami, kde zrovna se slaví veselé hody; při noční záři lůny rej rusalek; na blízkých skalách vypínají se pyšně hrady, zámky a zříceniny, Vltava víří v proudech Svatojánských; teče v širokém toku dále ku Praze, Vyšehrad se objeví, konečně mizí v dálce v majestátném toku svém v Labi.
