Ondine, from Gaspard de la Nuit by Maurice Ravel - Wei Wei, piano My good friend, pianist Wei Wei (24 july 1982) played Gaspard de la Nuit by Maurice Ravel at her 'Master of Music' recital (19 june 2008, Fentener van Vlissingenzaal, Utrecht). Wei Wei started playing piano when she was seven years old. After having spent her youngest years in Ürümqi (Xinjiang, China), she was accepted in the Young Talent School of the Sichuan Conservatory (Chengdu, China), amongst other prize winning talent such as Chen Sa, Wu Chi and Yundi Li. After six years in Chengdu, she moved to The Netherlands where she studied bachelor and master of classical piano in the Utrecht School of the Arts with Paolo Giacometti, one of The Netherlands' leading pianists.

La Vita è Bella - Offenbach, Barcarolle - Tales of Hoffman, Belle n Barcarolle (from The Tales Of Hoffmann) written by Jacques Offenbach.The term barcorolle (also barcarola, barcarole) in fact denotes a Venetian folk song sung by the gondoliers. In classical music there are two famous barcarolle, one of them being this particular one by Offenbach (the other by Chopin). Originally titled "Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour" this barcarolle features in the 2nd Act of the Opera The Tales of Hoffman (Les contes d'Hoffmann). The Barcarolle has also featured in many movies, including Life Is Beautiful.

In classical music, two of the most famous barcaroles are those by Jacques Offenbach, from his opera The Tales of Hoffmann and Frederic Chopin's Barcarole in F sharp major for solo piano. A barcarole is characterized by a rhythm reminiscent of the gondolier's stroke, almost invariably a moderate tempo 6/8 meter. The Tales of Hoffmann (Les contes d'Hoffmann) is an opera by Jacques Offenbach. "Ondine" by Maurice Ravel. Cheryl Shantz performs her best loved piano piece "Ondine." This is the 1st Movement of "Gaspard de la Nuit" (treasurer of the night) which was composed by Maurice Ravel in 1908 and based on three poems by the French poet Aloysius Bertrand (1807-1841). It consists of three movements which are "Ondine," "Le Gibet," and "Scarbo." "Ondine" is a dreamy tale of a water nymph or fairy who seduces her male listener in order to entice and draw him down to her kingdom deep at the bottom of the lake in the elemental triangle of fire, earth, and air. According to some legends, Ondine cannot gain a soul unless she marries a man and has his child. The piano music creates the mood of water tinkling in a stream, woven with cascades.
