[Arthaus 100713] TCHAIKOVSKY: Swan Lake (Bolshoi Ballet, 1989)
[Arthaus 100713] TCHAIKOVSKY: Swan Lake (Bolshoi Ballet, 1989) From the Bolshoi Theatre 1989. Swan Lake is the very essence of classical ballet and has a rather venerable history of its own. First choreographed in 1877 by the great Marius Petipa for the Bolshoi, this original choreography has since been tweaked by almost every choreographer to get hold of it down through the years. Yuri Grigorovich keeps the general outline of the story of a prince who falls in love with the mythic half-woman, half-swan Odette (only to betray her when she appears to him in disguise as Odile). Grigorovich however added a controversial twist with his inclusion of a psychological dimension to the proceedings: the evil sorcerer cast as the dark twin of the hero-prince. The pearl of this production is undoubtedly Alla Mikhalchenko as Odette-Odile. Her impressive technique and brilliant acting gives the character a new expressive dimension. Swan Lake - Chinese Acrobatic Ballet-Part1
Swan Lake - Chinese Acrobatic Ballet-Part1 With breathtaking perfection and grace the "Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China" tells the fairytale on the verge of human physical abilities. More than 100 acrobats and dancers show their world-famous art in gorgeous and colorful stage designs and props. They are juggling with balls while they perform a toe dance. Gym wheels seem to waltz and acrobats thrill the audience by "dancing" as frogs for several minutes solely on their hands. There seems to be no gravity, when the princess (Wu Zhengdan) is dancing en pointe not only on the shoulder of her beloved prince (Wei Baohua), but also on his head. This production of "Swan Lake" unites power, perfection and grace in a magical way. In wonderful stage designs, classical music and tradition of ballet melt with Eastern acrobatic to a unique show.
Prokofiev: Cinderella (Paris Opera Ballet)
Prokofiev: Cinderella (Paris Opera Ballet) Rudolf Nureyevs colourful, movie-star version of Prokofievs Cinderella retains the classic Perrault story but sets it in America during the difficult years of the Great Depression in the 1930s and 1940s. Agnès Letestu stars as Cinderella who, living with her alcoholic father, tyrannical stepmother and two spiteful stepsisters, dreams of escape and stardom in Hollywood. After a promising screen-test during which The Film Star, suavely portrayed by José Martinez, falls head over heels in love with her, she is fearful that her new-found happiness is too good to be true and will vanish with her youth. Fortunately, her magical protector (in the form of The Producer) and her lover move heaven and earth for a happily ever after ending. This is Paris Opera Ballet at its very best.
