"La donna è mobile" - Giuseppe Verdi, from Rigoletto: Transcripti
"La donna è mobile" - Giuseppe Verdi, from Rigoletto: Transcripti www.onlineguitaracademy.net - A Romantic Period composer, Verdi (1813-1901) had his greatest success with opera and other vocal works. Rigoletto is one of his best-known. A tangled drama portraying affairs, betrayal, and revenge, Rigoletto is as relevant today as it was when it was written. "La donna è mobile," a canzone sung by a playboy, the Duke of Mantua, about the fickleness of women, gives the audience a moment of comic relief in the midst of a dark tale. The moment of irony, of which the character is blissfully unaware, reveals itself as the womanizer boasts about his superiority to women in the area of stability, even as he plots his next conquest. A surprisingly feminist element in an opera from the mid-nineteenth century, the commentary on gender issues still speaks to audiences today. "Promenade," from Pictures at an Exhibition - Modest Mussorgsky (G
"Promenade," from Pictures at an Exhibition - Modest Mussorgsky (G www.onlineguitaracademy.net - The opening movement in Mussorgsky's suite for piano, the Promenade depicts a man who roams an exhibition honoring a deceased artist, searching for a treasured work that he had admired in the past. The entire orchestral suite describes the paintings that the man sees as he browses through the gallery. Pictures at an Exhibition is Mussorgsky's tribute to a dear friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann, who had passed away suddenly the year before Mussorgsky composed the suite. Its most famous incarnation is the orchestral suite arranged by Maurice Ravel. This guitar transcription takes the work back to its roots as a suite for a solo instrument. The classical guitar, with its plethora of tone colors, dynamic variations, and range of pitches, is more than equal to the task. "Dido's Lament," from Dido and Aeneas - Henry Purcell
"Dido's Lament," from Dido and Aeneas - Henry Purcell www.onlineguitaracademy.net - This plaintive aria from Purcell's opera, Dido and Aeneas, is the cry of a heartbroken Dido, whose lover, Aeneas, has left her suddenly, without warning. Her grief plunges the ancient queen into a deep depression which results in suicide. Her compassion for those she left behind, including her former lover, is compelling, Her final words speak volumes about her character She pleads, "When I am laid...in earth, may my wrongs create...no trouble...in thy breast....Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate." The guitar is probably one of the best instruments to convey these timeless sentiments without words. Its wide range of tone colors and dynamics can create the emotional tension to convey such depth of feeling. Its heritage, dating back to similar plucked instruments used during that era, helps re-create the setting of the story.
