Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet - Montagues and Capulets, Dance Of The K
Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet - Montagues and Capulets, Dance Of The K Great piece, maybe my favourite out of all Prokofiev's music. Montagues and Capulets also known as Dance of the Knights is a score composed by Sergei Prokofiev. It is from Act I, Scene 2 of the ballet Romeo and Juliet. A dark and atmospheric piece, it has become a de facto signature tune for the Soviet era, and is used as the soundtrack for numerous dramas, documentaries and adverts that have Soviet subject matter. It was used as the background music in a popular 1990s French commercial for Chanel's Egoiste fragrance, and it was the competition music for the Canadian television mockumentary Kenny vs. Spenny. The piece has also been used as the theme score for the English football club Sunderland who play at the Stadium of Light in order to evoke a stirring mood before kick-off and to trouble the nerves of visiting opponents. Since the stadium opened in 1997, Dance of the Knights is played, in full, before the teams walk out onto the pitch before the game. The use of the piece in this context saw interest in Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet rise sharply in the North-East of England toward the end of the 1990s.[citation needed] Furthermore, this composition is used as title music for the movie Caligula. The German Technical Death Metal band Necrophagist uses a portion of this piece at the end of their song Only Ash Remains. It is also used in the song 'Lords of Bedlam' by the Austrian symphonic death metal band Hollenthon. The Smiths would also famously come on stage to the ...
Tan Dun: Zheng Concerto (1/4)
Tan Dun: Zheng Concerto (1/4) Tan Dun (b. 1957): Concerto for Zheng and String Orchestra I. Andante molto Philharmonie Essen, July 11 2008. Yuan Li, Zheng Tan Dun, Conductor WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln A re-arrangement of the "Pipa Concerto" (1999) which is based on "Ghost Opera" (1995) for string quartet and pipa with water, metal, stones, and paper. In the "Zheng Concerto" the players are not only playing their own instruments, but also contributing stomps, yips, yells, sighs and hand-slaps, sometimes in imitation of Eastern instruments. It's a cross-temporal and cross-cultural dialogue that touches on the past, present, future, and the eternal. The Concerto employs elements from Chinese, Tibetan, English, and American cultures; and combines performance traditions of the European classical concert and the shamanistic ritual. Wu Man called it a "giddy merging of traditions and a leapfrogging through music history, in which cultural integration is effortless. The Zheng may be exotic in Western music, but it is no longer alien. No single work more exemplifies Tan's range, which extends from uncompromising experimentalism to populism."
Pachelbel Canon in D Original Instruments
Pachelbel Canon in D Original Instruments Support our videos! voicesofmusic.org Johann Pachelbel's beautiful interweaving of melody & harmony--one of the great works of music! Soundtrack at tinyurl.com Performed on original instruments by San Francisco Early Music Ensemble Voices of Music. Featuring Katherine Kyme, Carla Moore & Cynthia Freivogel, baroque violin; Tanya Tomkins, baroque cello, Hanneke van Proosdij, baroque organ; David Tayler, theorbo. About the performance: the canon is played using not only the instruments but also the bowing techniques from the time of Pachelbel. As you can see from the video, especially if you look at the high definition version, the string instruments are not only baroque, but they are in baroque setup: this means that the strings, fingerboard, bridge and other parts of the violin appear just as they did in Pachelbel's time. No metal hardware such as chinrests, clamps or fine tuners are used on the violins, allowing the violins to vibrate freely. A good example of baroque bowing can be seen in the extended passage of repeated notes: the musicians play these notes on one bow—the shorter & lighter baroque bow—to created a gliding effect. The players also hold the bow very differently which affects the balance and touch. Both the style and the amount of vibrato are based on baroque treatises which describe the methods for playing, bowing & articulation in the late 17th century. The narrow, shimmering vibrato blends with the baroque organ. The organ used is made entirely of wood ...
