I hope you enjoy them as an accompaniment to the music, To see them and more like them, you may visit www.flickr.com ABOUT THE MUSIC Unlike the more familiar choral concert masses, which are musical settings of the Latin Ordinarium, Franz Schuberts so-called Deutsche Messe of 1827 (DV 872) was conceived as incidental musica suite of eight German-language carols to be intercalated at specified points during a spoken reading of the Ordinarium. The lyricist and commissioning patron, Johann Phillipp Neumann, had only an amateur choir at his disposal, and thus requested that the music be kept very simple. This might have been a recipe for mediocrity or worse, but through Schuberts extraordinary melodic gift a genuinely charming work was produced; the first and third numbers in particular have a limpid, gossamer quality which make them favorites of mine. Chopin invented musical forms such as the ballade[12] and was responsible for major innovations in forms such as the piano sonata, waltz, nocturne, étude, impromptu and prelude. His works are mainstays of Romanticism in 19th-century classical music. Chopin composed 58 Mazurkas (there seem to be at least another 2 unfinished sketches) and many of his other works of different genres are either inspired by the Mazurka or have parts of Mazurkas within them. Chopin did, of course, not invent the Mazurka form. However, it was he alone who put the Mazurka on the public stage and refined it into the highest art of music. In his Mazurkas, you get to know the very soul of Poland and Chopin never forgot his home land or the poor farmers singing the Mazurkas during the time of harvest. Chopin started his composing with a Polonaise and ended with a Mazurka, thus closing the circle.

It was originally choreographed by Julius Reisinger to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (opus 20). First presented as The Lake of the Swans by the Ballet of the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Theatre on February 20/March 4, 1877 (Julian/Gregorian calendar dates) in Moscow, Russia. Although the ballet is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, staged for the Imperial Ballet, first presented January 15, 1895 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.
