Sortie - Secret Garden - New Album 2008
- Classical music Secret Garden is an award winning Irish-Norwegian duo playing New Instrumental Music, also understood by some as Neo-classical music. It features the Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and the Norwegian composer/pianist Rolf Løvland. Secret Garden has sold over 3 million albums and won the Eurovision Song Contest for Norway's second time in 1995 with the composition Nocturne. It was the first and only time to date that a predominantly instrumental piece has won the Eurovision Song Contest, although a few Norwegian language lyrics, written by screenwriter Petter Skavlan, were included to ensure that the entry adhered to the contest's rules. Norwegian singer Gunnhild Tvinnereim sang the song in the Eurovision Song Contest, but is actually not a member of the group. Ten years earlier Rolf Løvland also co-wrote the song "La det swinge" (Let it swing) that secured Norway its first Eurovision Song Contest victory in 1985. Their success at Eurovision spearheaded the success of their first album Songs from a Secret Garden. It sold a million copies around the world going platinum in Norway and Korea, gold in Ireland, Hong Kong and New Zealand and spending two years in the Billboard New Age charts in 1996 and 1997. Barbra Streisand adapted "Heartstrings" from this album as the song "I've Dreamed Of You" on her A Love Like Ours album. She also used "Heartstrings" in her wedding to James Brolin. The album White Stones followed in 1997 also making the top ten on Billboard New Age charts ...

È strano! È strano! In core
scolpiti ho quegli accenti!
Saria per me sventura un serio amore?
Che risolvi, o turbata anima mia?
Null'uomo ancora t'accendeva -- O gioia
ch'io non conobbi, esser amata amando!
E sdegnarla poss'io
per l'aride follie del viver mio?
Ah, fors'è lui che l'anima
solinga ne' tumulti
godea sovente pingere
de' suoi colori occulti!
Lui che modesto e vigile
all'egre soglie ascese,
e nuova febbre accese,
destandomi all'amor.
A quell'amor ch'è palpito
dell'universo intero,
misterioso, altero,
croce e delizia al cor!
Follie! follie! Delirio vano è questo!
Povera donna, sola,
abbandonata in questo
popoloso deserto
che appellano Parigi.
Che spero or più?
Che far degg'io? Gioire,
di voluttà ne' vortici perir.
Gioir, gioir!
Sempre libera degg'io
folleggiare di gioia in gioia,

pei sentieri del piacer.
Nasca il giorno, o il giorno muoia,
sempre lieta ne' ritrovi,

Vitalij Margulis plays Chopin's Nocturne no.8 Op.27/2 in D-Flat Major. For good quality of sound (stereo) & vision click this link: www.youtube.com The few albums of Ukrainian pianist Vitalij Margulis (1928) that I've come across through the years are all brilliant and whenever I compare his interpretations to those of other famous pianists my ears always reach the same conclusion: Vitalij Margulis' interpretations seem to be unsurpassable. A bold statement? Well, probably yes, but I think Vitalij Margulis should be considered by everyone at least as a very brilliant representative of the 'Russian School'. I thought it would be nice to introduce him here on youtube cause he's nowhere else here to be found and I think many lovers of classical music have never heard of him. I'm sure they'll be delighted to hear him. Vitalij Margulis is a 'secret genius' and I'm sure you'll enjoy his playing here of Chopin's Nocturne no.8 Op.27/2 in D-Flat Major, a fine example of his musical powers. To illustrate the video I've added pictures of Amsterdam, all taken from the worldwide web.

In June 2008, Jean Yves Thibaudet will premiere his Piano Concerto, commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony, to be conducted by Robert Spano. Songs of Eternity was written for Renée Fleming, who gave the premiere with the Seattle Symphony, conducted by Gerard Schwarz; Joshua Bell was the soloist in the premiere performances of the Violin Concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, also conducted by Schwarz. Bell went on to give the works North American premiere with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra , conducted by Mario Venzago, and further performances with Peter Oundjian and the Toronto Symphony. Recordings include Persian Trilogy on the Delos label by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. This orchestral cycle, comprising the works Seven Passages, Seemorgh, and The Blood of Seyavash, takes its inspiration from ancient Persian legends, as recounted in the 11th century epic poem Shahnameh (The Book of Kings). Ms. Falletta has also conducted Elegy for Cello and Orchestra with soloist Yo-Yo Ma and the Buffalo Philharmonic, described in the Buffalo press as etherealfragile, almost like a mirage. Ben Lee (UK) smashes "magic minute' barrier to become the Fastest Violin Player in the World. Rock violinist Ben Lee of acclaimed electric violin duo FUSE played 'Flight of the Bumblebee' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov on £1M Swarovski Crystal Violin in an astonishing 58.515 seconds - setting the new world record for the Fastest Violin Player. Judged by Guinness World Records officials and musical experts Ben Lee set the new record with a performance of 'Flight of the Bumblebee' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, playing on the world's most expensive electric violin. Ben Lee can now claim to have the fastest fingers in the world and live up to his reputation as the Usain Bolt of the violin world. 'Flight of the Bumblebee' is used to judge the Guinness World Record™ for the fastest violin player, as the piece is extremely fast and requires the technically demanding "sautille" bowing style. Ben performed on one of a pair of FUSE's exclusive Swarovski Crystal Bridge violins. Following in the footsteps of international superstars Madonna, Michael Jackson and Kylie Minogue, FUSE's Linzi Stoppard and Ben Lee joined forces with Swarovski to embellish each of their bespoke Bridge instruments with an incredible 50000 crystals each, every one hand-applied, creating the world's most expensive electric violins. Each violin is worth over one million pounds and was launched in-store at Harrods. Ben Lee commented, "Records are there to be broken, and I know I can take it even faster. The idea for ...

"The Elixir of Love" at Virginia Opera (2008)
Virginia Opera invites audiences to toast the holidays and fall head-over-heels for Gaetano Donizetti's romantic comedy "The Elixir of Love", coming to the stage in nine romping performances from Nov. 14 through Dec. 6 in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax, Va. Last staged here in 1998, "The Elixir of Love" is the classic love potion story, with a comic twist. In the Italian countryside, the young farmer Nemorino drinks a "magical" elixir in the hope it will help him win the love of Adina, the prettiest girl in town. Little does he know the potion, sold to him by a quack doctor, is little more than ordinary red wine. Soprano Jane Redding makes a delightful return to Virginia Opera's stage as Adina, having earned high praise from critics for previous comedic roles here, including Poppea in "Agrippina" (2007) and Susanna in "The Marriage of Figaro" (2006). Making their company debuts are tenor Joshua Kohl as the love struck farmer Nemorino and baritone Stephen Hartley as the debonair Sergeant Belcore. The cast of five is topped off by returning bass-baritone Todd Robinson as the traveling cure-all salesman, Dr. Dulcamara, and soprano Allison Pohl as Gianetta. Mr. Robinson virtually stole the show with his moving aria as Prince Gremin in "Eugene Onegin" earlier this year, and Ms. Pohl is an exciting talent who last season was a member of the company's Spectrum Resident Artist program for young artists.
