HE EMERGED FROM THE METRO AT THE L'ENFANT PLAZA STATION AND POSITIONED HIMSELF AGAINST A WALL BESIDE A TRASH BASKET. By most measures, he was nondescript: a youngish white man in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a Washington Nationals baseball cap. From a small case, he removed a violin. Placing the open case at his feet, he shrewdly threw in a few dollars and pocket change as seed money, swiveled it to face pedestrian traffic, and began to play.
It was 7:51 a.m. on Friday, January 12, the middle of the morning rush hour. In the next 43 minutes, as the violinist performed six classical pieces, 1,097 people passed by. Almost all of them were on the way to work, which meant, for almost all of them, a government job. L'Enfant Plaza is at the nucleus of federal Washington, and these were mostly mid-level bureaucrats with those indeterminate, oddly fungible titles: policy analyst, project manager, budget officer, specialist, facilitator, consultant.

Allegro Performed by the Freiburger Barockorchester Directed by Gottfried von der Goltz *The Concerto for Harp, Flute and Orchestra in C major was written in April 1778 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during his sojourn to Paris for the Court of Guines. It was commissioned (although never paid for) from Mozart, by the flautist Duke of Guînes, Adrien-Louis de Bonnières, and his harpist daughter who was taking composition lessons from the composer. This concerto is the only piece of music that Mozart wrote that contains the harp. In the classical period, the harp was still in development, and was not considered a standard orchestral instrument and was regarded more as a plucked piano. Therefore, harp and flute was considered an extremely unusual combination.

I also added a few orchestra strings to round up the sharp sound of the glasses This is one of the greatest hits in the classical world which was composed in the 1680's by Johann Pachelbel. Pachelbel's Canon, also known as Canon in D major (PWC 37, T. 337, PC 358), is the most famous piece of music by German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel. It was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue in the same key. When commissioned to write this viola concerto he admitted to knowing very little of the viola except that it made a rather awful sound! To me this piece portrays a lyrical and melancholy mood despite its moments of dissonance. If it sounds too awful, you can blame int on Walton's perception of the viola. <br /><br />Performers: <br />Joyalene Ng, viola; <br />Cynthia Westerbeck, piano accompaniment
