Jacqueline Du Pré: Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85 - Movement 4,
  • Classical music composed by Edward Elgar Jacqueline Du Pré (1945 - 1987) performs the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85; Sir John Barbirolli conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in this 1965 recording, issued on the Angel label (Angel 36638). (Angel Records is a record label belonging to EMI. It was formed in 1953 and specialised in classical music, but included an occasional operetta or Broadway score. The Angel trademark has been used by EMI, its predecessors, and affiliated companies since 1898.) Movement 4, Part 2: Allegro — Moderato — Allegro, ma non troppo — Poco più lento — Adagio Many critics consider du Pré's recording to be the definitive recording of the Elgar concerto. Du Pré's recording has been continually praised for its astonishing passion as well as a remarkably secure technique. Barbirolli himself had an association with the concerto from its very earliest days: he was a member of the cello section of the orchestra at its 1919 premiere; and he was the soloist at only its second public performance, with the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra under Sir Dan Godfrey.
