Donal Fox: Scarlatti Jazz Suite Project
Donal Fox's jazz plays upon many traditions <br /><br />"Fox's band has the Modern Jazz Quartet's poise <br />and John Coltrane Quartet's power" <br /><br />Composer/pianist Donal Fox has forged a unique amalgam of jazz, Latin American, and classical music. Past projects have focused on Johann Sebastian Bach, but the centerpiece of Saturday night's Regattabar performance was a jazz suite incorporating the music of Domenico Scarlatti . <br /><br />Fox was accompanied by vibraphonist Stefon Harris, bassist John Lockwood , and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. This instrumentation inevitably brings the Modern Jazz Quartet to mind, but Fox's band married that group's cool poise with the power and momentum of the John Coltrane Quartet. <br /><br />The opening number was based on an Astor Piazzolla tango. Rather than presenting the usual string of solos, piano and vibraphone engaged in a fluid, improvisatory dialogue. Lockwood and Carrington's bass and drums provided active but essentially supportive background for the friendly jousting of Fox and Harris. <br /><br />The second number was Fox's ``Inventions in Blue," which drew from Bach's Two-Part Invention No. 4 in D Minor. It began as a rapid, African-sounding vamp, spelled by lyrical piano chords that floated over the pulsating rhythm. Harris's swinging, bluesy solo was bouyed by Lockwood's walking bass and Carrington's urgent ride cymbal. <br /><br />By Kevin Lowenthal, Globe Correspondent June 2006 <br />© Copyright 2006 The New York Times Company

Gustav Mahler - Adagietto (from Symphony N°5)
Gustav Mahler's Adagietto from the Fifth Symphony. The audio recording here is specialy edited for the YouTube channel in order to maintain its completeness. There are no cut parts, this is the whole Adagietto, for your enjoyment. ---------------------------------- A note from the author(s): Dear, friends, I thank you for your nice comments and I am glad that you are enjoying these beautiful musical master pieces. I noticed that, from time to time, people will ask why is the image of Jean-Marc Barr on some of the clips. Well, it is a long story. Me (Mare79, a "name" from the image) and "Mayol" (a friend of mine) have made these several classical music videos during the time we were on one forum once. The picture of Jean-Marc Bar was the image of his avatar, and since all these videos were generally his idea, we decided to place a full photo of Jean-Marc in them. Jean-Marc had a role in one of his movies where he played a character named Mayol, so... It was just an idea at that time, but it still remained after all, since we didn't want to remove the video in order to upload a new one without this photo and make this clip an invalid entry in your favourites playlists. So, the smaller image represents the photo of the composer. Enjoy the music, and have a nice day. Best regards to all.

WA Mozart "Exsultate, jubilate" (Part l) Allegro Edith Mathis - Soprano Bernhard Klee - Conductor Staatskapelle Dresden Paintings: Philipp Otto Runge (1977 - 1810) Special thanks to fj5a017 for his kind advice about Philipp Otto Runge Philipp Otto Runge was born on July 23, 1777 as the ninth of ten children in Wolgast (West Pomerania). His parents, the shipping company owner and merchant Daniel Nicolas Runge and Magdalena Dorothea Runge were wealthy protestant townspeople. As a boy Runge was often ill. At the Wolgast town school, which he attended from 1789, he was intellectually challenged by his teacher Gotthard Ludwig Kosegarten, who introduced him to 'Sturm und Drang' and Classical literature and philosophy. After school, where his artistic talent had already been identified by Kosegarten, Runge began an apprenticeship as a merchant in Hamburg in 1795. His brother Daniel introduced him to young poets and art lovers in Hamburg. From 1797 Philipp Otto Runge took drawing lessons under Joachim Herterich. His yearning to become a painter grew. He received instructions in drawing from Gert Hardorff the Elder and in oil painting from Dietrich Eckhart. From 1799 he studied at the Copenhagen art academy. During his studies Runge met Friderike Brun, who considerably influenced Runge with her art collection and her circle of friends. Emil Gilels - Mozart, Fantasia in d-moll KV 397
Emil Grigoryevich Gilels (Ukrainian: Емі́ль Григо́рович Гі́лельс, Russian: Эми́ль Григо́рьевич Ги́лельс, Emi'li Grego'rievič Gi'lelis; October 19, 1916 October 14, 1985) was a Soviet pianist, widely considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His last name is sometimes transliterated Hilels. Gilels was born in Odessa (now part of Ukraine). He began studying the piano at the age of five[3] under Yakov Tkach, who was a student of the French pianists Raoul Pugno[4] and Alexander Villoing[3] Thus, through Tkach, Gilels had a pedagogical genealogy stretching back to Chopin, via Pugno, and to Muzio Clementi, via Villoing. Tkach was a stern disciplinarian who emphasized scales and studies. Gilels later credited this strict training for establishing the foundation of his technique.[3] Gilels made his public debut at the age of 12 in June 1929 with a well-received program of Beethoven, Scarlatti, Chopin, and Schumann.[3] In 1930, Gilels entered the Odessa Conservatory where he was coached by Berta Reingbald, whom Gilels credited as a formative influence. After graduating from the Odessa Conservatory (Ukraine) in 1935 , he moved to Moscow where he studied under the famous piano teacher Heinrich Neuhaus until 1937. A year later he was awarded first prize at the 1938 Ysaÿe International Festival in Brussels by a distinguished jury whose members included Arthur Rubinstein, Samuil Feinberg, Emil von Sauer, Ignaz Friedman, Walter Gieseking, Robert Casadesus, and <b>...</b>
