Some of the most memorable music for brass was written by Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli, and this new ensemble from Sydney (formed for a Sydney Chamber Choir concert) played some of it and talked about how they got 'surround sound' back in the 16th century. HE EMERGED FROM THE METRO AT THE L'ENFANT PLAZA STATION AND POSITIONED HIMSELF AGAINST A WALL BESIDE A TRASH BASKET. By most measures, he was nondescript: a youngish white man in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a Washington Nationals baseball cap. From a small case, he removed a violin. Placing the open case at his feet, he shrewdly threw in a few dollars and pocket change as seed money, swiveled it to face pedestrian traffic, and began to play.
It was 7:51 a.m. on Friday, January 12, the middle of the morning rush hour. In the next 43 minutes, as the violinist performed six classical pieces, 1,097 people passed by. Almost all of them were on the way to work, which meant, for almost all of them, a government job. L'Enfant Plaza is at the nucleus of federal Washington, and these were mostly mid-level bureaucrats with those indeterminate, oddly fungible titles: policy analyst, project manager, budget officer, specialist, facilitator, consultant.

Ukrainian Musicians Win Russia’s Balalaika Festival
The Russian folk string instrument balalaika is still very much in demand. So say the participants of a Moscow festival called "Balalaika is the Soul of Russia". You can play simple folk songs on the instrument, or even classical pieces by Gaidan, Liszt, and Bach. <br /><br />[Michael Maidanov, Festival Organizer]: <br /><br />“There is increased interest, numbers of balalaika players, and enthusiasm towards the music, which can only be achieved when the most widely recognized musicians perform the most popular stages. In order to achieve this, the academic side must be raised.” <br /><br />Requirements for participants are high. They must perform a musical piece, created specifically for the competition, along with more famous pieces. Moscow resident Denis Bichkov practiced Tarantella by Levin for one month. He’s serious about playing the balalaika and plans to become a professional musician. <br /><br />[Denis Bichkov, Competitor]: <br /><br />“Unfortunately, not many people play the balalaika these days. That's not good, because people are forgetting the roots of Russian culture. There is a saying – there's no future without knowing the past.” <br /><br />Although the balalaika is considered to be a Russian folk instrument, Ukrainians ended up upstaging Russia, winning the competition. Crimea natives Bogdan Durd and Michiel Kandaurov received first and third place prizes. They performed in front of a Russian audience for the first time, but have toured their home land for a long time. <br /><br />[Bogdan Durd, Competition Winner]: <br /><br />“When I first started competing, I felt nervous. Later, I got used to it. When I perform, I watch the audience. Their reaction is interesting. The applause is, of course, nice to hear.” <br /><br />The audience was also satisfied. <br /><br />[Natalia Nagibna, Audience]: <br /><br />“Actually, I do not regret being here. Summertime - Piano Improvisation
at the moment I live in Germany and here the summer is nearly always much humid one (RAIN), I hatred this type of summer and I have tried this my version of "Summertime" what mean's for me this 2007 German much rain summer.
Many of his compositions have been used on television and in numerous films, and many became jazz standards. The jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald recorded many of the Gershwins' songs on her 1959 Gershwin Songbook (arranged by Nelson Riddle). Countless singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin songs, including Fred Astaire, Louis Armstrong, Al Jolson, Bobby Darin, Art Tatum, Bing Crosby, Janis Joplin, John Coltrane, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Madonna, Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, Marni Nixon, Natalie Cole, Patti Austin, Nina Simone, Maureen McGovern, John Fahey, The Residents, Sublime, and Sting.
About the composer:
George Gershwin (September 26, 1898 July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist whose early death brought to a premature halt one of the most remarkable careers in American music. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are universally familiar. He wrote most of his vocal and theatrical works in collaboration with his elder brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin. George Gershwin composed music for both Broadway and the classical concert hall, as well as popular songs that brought his work to an even wider public.
Gershwin's compositions have been used in numerous films and on television, and many became jazz standards recorded in numerous variations. Countless singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin songs.
Early life
Gershwin was named Jacob Gershowitz at birth in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898. His parents were Russian Jews. His father, Morris (Moishe) Gershowitz, changed his family name to 'Gershvin' sometime after immigrating to the United States from St. Petersburg, Russia in the early 1890s. Gershwin's mother Rosa Bruskin had already immigrated from Russia. She met Gershowitz in New York and they married on July 21, 1895.[1] (George changed the spelling of the family name to 'Gershwin' after he became a professional musician; other members of his family followed suit.)

at the moment I live in Germany and here the summer is nearly always much humid one (RAIN), I hatred this type of summer and I have tried this my version of "Summertime" what mean's for me this 2007 German much rain summer.Many of his compositions have been used on television and in numerous films, and many became jazz standards. Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are universally familiar. George Gershwin composed music for both Broadway and the classical concert hall, as well as popular songs that brought his work to an even wider public.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Countless beloved pieces of so-called classical music have a nickname, often one not given by the composer. Mozart would have no idea what the "Jupiter" Symphony is, Beethoven the "Emperor" Concerto or "Moonlight" Sonata, or Schubert the "Unfinished" Symphony. The names sometimes come from savvy publishers who know they can improve sales, or from impresarios, critics, or performers. The case of the Concerto we hear today is particularly interesting, and only recently explained. Little is known of the genesis or first performance of the E-flat Concerto. Twentieth-century accounts usually stated that Mozart composed it for a French keyboard virtuoso named Mademoiselle Jeunehomme, who visited Salzburg in the winter of 1777. Nothing else was known, not even the woman's first name.
Last year, the Viennese musicologist Michael Lorenz, a specialist in the music of Mozart's and Schubert's time and a brilliant archival detective, figured out the mystery. The nickname was coined by the French scholars Théodore de Wyzewa and Georges de Saint-Foix in their classic early-20th-century study of the composer. A: The bar-graph score is graphical, and in it, time translates exactly into horizontal position; conventional notation is symbolic, so there is usually one symbol per note, regardless of whether it's a long or a short note, and the symbols are more or less evenly spaced (for legibility); so, when the notes are faster, the notation needs to move faster to keep up.

A: I don't know, but the first time I heard this piece in a concert, I cried too. I also cried the first time I read through it with string players. Something about it.

A: The colors indicate: violin, viola, violoncello, piano top staff, piano bottom staff.
Q: Why do the scores move at different speeds?
A: The bar-graph score is graphical, and in it, time translates exactly into horizontal position; conventional notation is symbolic, so there is usually one symbol per note, regardless of whether it's a long or a short note, and the symbols are more or less evenly spaced (for legibility); so, when the notes are faster, the notation needs to move faster to keep up.

A: I don't know, but the first time I heard this piece in a concert, I cried too. I also cried the first time I read through it with string players. Something about it.
