Igor Stravinsky - Elegy for Solo Viola (1944)
Igor Stravinsky, Elegy for solo viola (1944) Played flawlessly by Miles Hoffman. (His channel is MilesHoffmanViola) This short 5-minute work remains to be Stravinsky's only contribution to viola literature. It has been said that world renowned violist William Primrose once proposed commissioning a viola concerto from Stravinsky, but Stravinsky was not interested in the project, so he went to Bartok instead who did agree to the offer. The Elegy was commissioned by Germain Prevost to honor the memory of Alphonse Onnou (1893-1940). Prevost, who was an extremely sentimental man, not only commissioned Stravinsky for this work, but also his friend Darius Milhaud, who wrote three works for viola and piano in memory of Onnou as well. Undoubtedly in the war torn year of 1944, in which this work was composed, there were many victims worthy of this somber token of remembrance. Thank you for 45000 views!

Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring - Sacrificial Dance
Title :Igor Stravinsky ,The Rite of Spring - Sacrificial Dance From Wikipedia,The Rite of Spring, commonly referred to by its original French title, Le Sacre du Printemps (Russian: Весна священная, Vesna svjaščennaja) is a ballet with music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, original choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, and original set design and costumes by archaeologist and painter Nicholas Roerich, all under impressario Serge Diaghilev. The music is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest, most influential, and reproduced compositions in history. It is iconic for 20th century classical or avant garde European music, with innovative complex rhythmic structures, timbres, and use of dissonance. The scandal of a riot at its 1913 premier, caused by its innovative technique and content, made it one of the most internationally well known and controversial works in performance historyThe music for Le Sacre du Printemps is regarded as one of the pinnacles of human intellectual achievement. Composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, in his Six Talks at Harvard, said of one passage, That page is sixty years old, but its never been topped for sophisticated handling of primitive rhythms, and of the work as a whole, its also got the best dissonances anyone ever thought up, and the best asymmetries and polytonalities and polyrhythms and whatever else you care to name. The Rite of Spring is a series of episodes depicting a wild pagan spring ritual: "... the wise elders are seated ...

It could be the premiere recording, but I'm not sure, as there's also the Pierre Monteux recording of the same year. (Pierre Monteux having conducted the premiere performance) The Rite of Spring was a ballet, created in 1913, with a choreography by Vaslav Nijisky, set and costume designs by Nicholas Roerich, and Stravinsky as composer. The premiere performance in Paris caused a total scandal and riot, as audiences at that time, being used to the classical ballet were shocked by the primitive, chaotic nature of the performance and composition. Stravinsky clarified the subject when he wrote in 1910 : "... there arose a picture of a sacred pagan ritual: the wise elders are seated in a circle and are observing the dance before death of the girl whom they are offering as a sacrifice to the god of Spring in order to gain his benevolence." Leonard Bernstein once said about a passage :"That page is sixty years old, but it's never been topped for sophisticated handling of primitive rhythms..." Stravinsky Petrouchka (1/4)
Part 1: Igor Stravinsky: Petrouchka, Ballet in Four Parts -- Even the most stubborn Stravinsky-hater, just like me, will find it hard to resist Petrouchka. Comedy rarely found in too many ballets are found plenty here, and the primal music and the even-more-primal Petrouchka will make you roar with laughter. Or maybe its just me. Its not the best production, but since there was none on Youtube and personally, I find actually seeing the ballet much enjoyable than just listening to the music. The plot adds another deep layer of fun in it. As I said, there should be better ones, but hopefully you should be able to enjoy it at least. PS Make sure you pay attention to the Petrouchka chord. Similar elements can be found that is also found in Wagners operas. Might as well call this chord a sort of a leitmotif.

"The Elixir of Love" at Virginia Opera (2008)
Virginia Opera invites audiences to toast the holidays and fall head-over-heels for Gaetano Donizetti's romantic comedy "The Elixir of Love", coming to the stage in nine romping performances from Nov. 14 through Dec. 6 in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax, Va. Last staged here in 1998, "The Elixir of Love" is the classic love potion story, with a comic twist. In the Italian countryside, the young farmer Nemorino drinks a "magical" elixir in the hope it will help him win the love of Adina, the prettiest girl in town. Little does he know the potion, sold to him by a quack doctor, is little more than ordinary red wine. Soprano Jane Redding makes a delightful return to Virginia Opera's stage as Adina, having earned high praise from critics for previous comedic roles here, including Poppea in "Agrippina" (2007) and Susanna in "The Marriage of Figaro" (2006). Making their company debuts are tenor Joshua Kohl as the love struck farmer Nemorino and baritone Stephen Hartley as the debonair Sergeant Belcore. The cast of five is topped off by returning bass-baritone Todd Robinson as the traveling cure-all salesman, Dr. Dulcamara, and soprano Allison Pohl as Gianetta. Mr. Robinson virtually stole the show with his moving aria as Prince Gremin in "Eugene Onegin" earlier this year, and Ms. Pohl is an exciting talent who last season was a member of the company's Spectrum Resident Artist program for young artists. Rachmaninoff - Vocalise For Violin
Title : Sergei Rachmaninov, Vocalise (Songs (14), Op. 34: no 14)
From Wikipedia,Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14 is a song by Sergei Rachmaninoff, published in 1912 as the last of his Fourteen Songs, Opus 34. Written for voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, but is sung using any one vowel (of the singer's choosing). It was dedicated to soprano Antonina Nezhdanova.
Although the original publication stipulates that the song may be sung by either soprano or tenor voice, it is usually chosen to be performed by a soprano. As with many classical vocal pieces, it is transcribed in a variety of keys, allowing the performer to choose a vocal range more suitable to their natural voice, so that artists who may not have the higher range of a soprano can nevertheless perform the song. When sung by a tenor, it is sung an octave lower than the same key when sung by a soprano.
