Pearl Fishers Duet - Jussi Björling and Robert Merrill
The legendary recording of the Pearl Fishers Duet, with the thrilling voices of Jussi Björling and Robert Merrill. The RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra is led by Renato Cellini. Recorded in 1950, this version of the great Bizet duet is unarguably a classic, and still the finest version around. My video seeks to commemorate the lives of these wonderful singers: they are true legends, and should never be forgotten. '"Au fond du temple saint...was always top of listener's polls for the BBC's Your Hundred Best Tunes. It was also No 1. in ABC's "The Classic 100 Opera", a poll in which Australians voted for the one moment in opera they could not live without.'(Wikipedia)

Robert Schumann - Dichterliebe, Op. 48 Pt 1-4 Fischer-Dieskau Salzbu
I received a kind request (thank you!) to upload some of this performance of Dichterliebe and decided that this would be a perfect presentation to honor Fischer-Dieskau's 84th birthday on May 28. This performance comes from Fischer-Dieskau's debut solo recital at the Salzburg Festival on August 13, 1956. His partner at the piano is Gerald Moore. "Dichterliebe", 'The Poet's Love' (composed 1840), is the best-known song cycle of Robert Schumann (Op. 48). The texts for the 16 songs come from the "Lyrisches Intermezzo" of Heinrich Heine, composed 1822-1823, published as part of the poet's "Das Buch der Lieder". The very natural, almost hyper-sensitive poetical affections of the poems are beautifully mirrored in Schumann's settings, with their miniaturist chromaticism and suspensions. The poet's love is a hothouse of nuanced responses to the delicate language of flowers, dreams and fairy-tales. Schumann adapts the words of the poems to his needs for the songs, sometimes repeating phrases and often rewording a line to supply the desired cadence. Notes from Wikipedia. English translations of the Heine poems by Paul Hindemith. VIOLETTA (sola)
È strano! È strano! In core
scolpiti ho quegli accenti!
Saria per me sventura un serio amore?
Che risolvi, o turbata anima mia?
Null'uomo ancora t'accendeva -- O gioia
ch'io non conobbi, esser amata amando!
E sdegnarla poss'io
per l'aride follie del viver mio?
Ah, fors'è lui che l'anima
solinga ne' tumulti
godea sovente pingere
de' suoi colori occulti!
Lui che modesto e vigile
all'egre soglie ascese,
e nuova febbre accese,
destandomi all'amor.
A quell'amor ch'è palpito
dell'universo intero,
misterioso, altero,
croce e delizia al cor!
Follie! follie! Delirio vano è questo!
Povera donna, sola,
abbandonata in questo
popoloso deserto
che appellano Parigi.
Che spero or più?
Che far degg'io? Gioire,
di voluttà ne' vortici perir.
Gioir, gioir!
Sempre libera degg'io
folleggiare di gioia in gioia,
vo' che scorra il viver mio
pei sentieri del piacer.
Nasca il giorno, o il giorno muoia,
sempre lieta ne' ritrovi,
a diletti sempre nuovi
dee volare il mio pensier.

La Donna è Mobile - Giuseppe Verdi
La donna è mobile
Qual piuma al vento
Muta d'accento
E di pensiero
Sempre un'amabile
Leggiadro viso
In pianto o in riso
È menzognero
La donna è mobil
Qual piuma al vento
Muta d'accento
E di pensier
E di pensier
E di pensier
è sempre misero
Chi a lei s'affida
Chi le confida
Mal cauto il core
Pur mai non sentesi
Felice appieno
Chi su quel seno
Non liba amore
La donna è mobil
Qual piuma al vento
Muta d'accento
E di pensier

Robert Schumann - Traumerei (Reverie)
Yay for classical video #2! :) This is the 7th piece from a collection of Schumann's works called "Kinderszenen", also known as Scenes from Childhood. I first learned this song from my piano teacher when I was 8, but at that age I had absolutely no emotion with playing this song. I've decided to bring this song back, since this is one of my favorite songs by Schumann. I hope you guys enjoy this piece just as much as I do. :)

It was one of three possibilities we were considering when writing with the race track in mind. In the end it was no contest; especially when we read the English transition of the Latin lyrics in the piece -- which speak of fate like a "wheel" and a "driving force!" Our version of O Fortuna was so much fun to create that it was done in a matter of three days (we couldn't let ourselves do anything else until it was finished). It consists of 6 piano tracks, 43 acoustic cello tracks, 3 percussion tracks, and 48 vocal tracks. Classical/guitar, Jim Greeninger, Recuerdos de la Alhambra
www.jimgreeninger.com - Guitar/classical, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, by Francisco Tarrega. Jim studied for several years with Maestro Andres Segovia. The guitar Jim is playing was built by himself and was recorded directly from the Baggs pickup via wireless transmitter and a live performance mic in the hall. This is because of the number of children and noise in the theater. It seemed to be the best way to accomplish a good recording, however, it does often sound like you are directly next to the guitar. Also hear this great piece by Pepe Romaro, Christopher Parkening, John Williams, and Julian Bream.

Rare. Rene Leibowitz conducts The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1962) Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. Here's Part 2 www.youtube.com

Debussy: Reverie ドビュッシー夢想
Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer who developed the "impressionist" style, which was an outgrowth of the "symbolist" movement in literature. Debussy sought to free music from what he believed to be rigid rules associated with most German oriented classical music. Some of the techniques Debussy used were whole-tone scales, exotic and eastern scales, chord clusters, glissandos, extreme dynamics, and the absence or disguising of barlines. Debussy remains one of the great innovators in piano music and orchestration in the entire history of music. Kapustin Etude 2 - Reverie (Kapustin plays Kapustin)
www.myspace.com (Audio from Album Kapustin plays Kapustin) Nikolai Girshevich Kapustin (Russian: Николай Гиршевич Капустин) (born November 22, 1937 in Gorlovka, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian composer and pianist. Kapustin studied piano with Avrelian Rubakh (pupil of Felix Blumenfeld who also taught Simon Barere and Vladimir Horowitz) and, later, Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatory. During the 1950s he acquired a reputation as a jazz pianist, arranger and composer. He is steeped, therefore, in both the traditions of classical virtuoso pianism and improvisational jazz.
