Eternal Flame is one of our most frequently viewed videos, and there aren't many guitar concerts where we don't get a sigh from the audience at the end of this lovely piece. In this arrangement of Eternal Flame, we play our 4 sizes of guitar - alto, prime, bass, and contra, to produce a sublime and deep sound and light accompaniment that's faithful to the original in its harmonies and countermelodies. Turn the volume up, close your eyes and lose yourself in this wonderful and powerful melody and beautifully shaped song that is Eternal Flame. Wynton Marsalis - Eternal Source Of Light Divine (Handel)
As controversial as he is popular, Wynton Learson Marsalis is one of the most prominent jazz musicians of the modern era and is also a well-known instrumentalist in classical music. Currently the Musical Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis has received many awards for his musical proficiency. These awards run the gambit of Grammys to a controversial awarding of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his three and half hour jazz oratorio CD box set Blood on the Fields, the first jazz album to win this award. Born in a musically oriented family in the New Orleans jazz scene at a young age Wynton was exposed to many legendary jazz musicians. Some of these musicians were Al Hirt, who gave Wynton his first trumpet when he was 6 years of age and Danny Barker, a legendary jazz banjoist who lead the Fairview Baptist Church band which Wynton was playing in when he was eight. Wynton was very active musically during high school and was a member in many New Orleans musical organizations such as the NO symphony brass quintet, the NO community concert band, NO youth orchestra, NO symphony and a popular local funk band called the Creators. In 1978 he had a two-year stay at the Juilliard School of Music before joining the Jazz Messengers to study under master drummer and bandleader, Art Blakey. Flamenco Guitar Master Vicente Gomez
This 1950s video features composer, guitarist Vicente Gomez performing some of his Alegrias composition. For those unfamiliar with Gomez, he was born in Madrid in 1911 and got an early start in music performing flamenco in his father's red light district tavern by the age of 8. Concert pianist Arthur Rubenstein eventually heard him play (presumably not while frequenting Madrid's red light district!) and encouraged him to pursue a professional career. He toured the world performing in the 1930s and became a US citizen in the 1940s. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and discharged in 1946, after which he opened a nightclub in New York, performing classical and flamenco music on his guitar nightly. During this period he also served as President of the New York Classical Guitar Society. In the 1950s he moved to Los Angeles and opened "The Academy of Spanish Arts" to teach classical and flamenco guitar, flamenco dancing, Spanish language, etc. He was also a frequent contributor to film music. Vicente Gomez passed away in December 2001 at the age of 90, just two months after his wife passed away.

Flamenco Spanish Guitar Malagueña Malaguena !!! A must see By Yanni
Flamenco .Malagueñas is one of the traditional styles of Andalusian music (flamenco), derived from earlier types of fandango from the area of Málaga, classified among the Cantes de Levante. Originally a folk-song type, it became a flamenco style in the 19th century. It is not normally used for dance, as it is generally interpreted with no regular rhythmic pattern, as a "cante libre". It has a very rich melody with virtuous flourishes and use of microtones. Its guitar accompaniment is normally played in open position first inversion giving E for the tonic, which can be transposed by using a capo. Origins Malagueñas derive from local variety of the Fandangos, a type of dance that, with different regional variations and even different names, became very popular in great part of Spain in the 18th century. Although nowadays malagueñas are a typical instance of "cante libre", performed at libitum and normally not used for the dance, folkloric fandangos were originally sung and played at a fast speed, with a rhythmic pattern in 6/8, to accompany dance. Some of these primitive fandangos from Málaga, called Verdiales are still performed nowadays at folkloric gatherings by large non-professional groups called "Pandas", which use a high number of guitars, "bandurrias" (a sort of mandoline), violins, and tambourines. [edit]Development Towards the second half of the 19th century, some interpreters gave the first steps in transforming this folkloric songs into real flamenco. They ...

E sdegnarla poss'io

A quell'amor ch'è palpito

misterioso, altero,

Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No1 Orchestra
Title: Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No.1 ( Orchestra )
From Wikipedia, The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist, Erik Satie.
These short, atmospheric pieces are written in 3/4 time, with each sharing a common theme and structure. Collectively, the Gymnopédies are regarded as the precursors to modern ambient music[citation needed] - gentle yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition. For instance, the first few bars feature a disjunct chordal theme in the bass - first, a G-major 7th in the bass, and then a B-minor chord, also in the lower register. Then comes the one-note theme in D major. Although the collection of chords at first seems too complex to be harmonious, the melody soon imbues the work with a soothing atmospheric quality.
Satie himself used the term "furniture music" to refer to some of his pieces, implying they could be used as mood-setting background music. However, Satie used this term to refer to only some of his later, 20th century compositions, without specific reference to the Gymnopédies as background music. From the second half of the 20th century on, the Gymnopédies were often erroneously described as part of Satie's body of furniture music, perhaps due to John Cage's interpretation of them.

Available on Itunes (in cooperation with the Gregory Bros. and Soulspazm Digital): itunes.apple.com Couldn't help it. Another instant classic by the Gregory Brothers. The shamisen makes me do these. The shamisen is the name of the instrument I'm playing. It comes from Japan, has three strings and no frets. I strike the strings with a big plectrum called a bachi! Woo! More on the Tsugaru shamisen here: en.wikipedia.org More of my own shamisen music here: themikepennyorchestra.bandcamp.com Tsugaru shamisen - Mike Penny
