Ma Non Troppo Vivace Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 is one of the best-known of all violin concertos. It follows the standard concerto form, with three movements in the pattern quick-slow-quick: 1. Allegro non troppo 2. Adagio 3. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace - Poco piu presto Originally, however, the work was planned in four movements like the second piano concerto. The middle movements, one of which was intended to be a scherzo, were replaced with what Brahms called a "feeble Adagio." The work was written in 1878 for the violinist and friend of Brahms, Joseph Joachim, who was the dedicatee. Brahms asked Joachim's advice on the writing of the solo violin part. The most familiar cadenzas used in the work are by Joachim, though a number of people have provided alternatives, including Leopold Auer, Max Reger, Fritz Kreisler, Jascha Heifetz, and George Enescu. A recording of the concerto released by Ruggiero Ricci has been coupled with sixteen different cadenzas. The work was premiered by Joachim in Leipzig on January 1, 1879. Various modifications were made between then and the work's publication by Fritz Simrock later in the year. In this, its third year, Aspen Ideas Festival once again gathers scientists, artists, politicians, historians, educators, activists, and other great thinkers around some of the most important and fascinating ideas of our time. As these thinkers present their provocative ideas, they engage a sophisticated and highly motivated audience.
Jung Lin is a classical pianist who has been acclaimed for her poetic and virtuosic performances. A native of Taiwan, she conducted her own orchestral works at age 12 and has won numerous competitions. At 16, her symphonic poem, The Black Wedding, was given its premiere by the Juilliard Symphony under Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Lin graduated with honors from the Juilliard School, and she has performed at such prestigious venues as the International Keyboard Institute and Festival, the Summit Festival in China, and at Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. Late this year, Naxos will release Jung Lin's two all-Medtner CDs, including the first complete recording of the Russian composer's 38 Fairy Tales.

Yes, it is old - very old - but it's also special, built by the renowned Venetian maker Matteo Goffriller in 1693. That means Johann Sebastian Bach was all of 8 years old when Goffriller slapped on the final layer of shellac.

Per-Olov Kindgren's arrangement and performance of Bach's beautiful and famous piece, Arioso from BWV 156. This is also named '"Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe." (English: " I stand with one foot in the grave". Original key is F Major but here it has been transposed to A Major to make it easier to play on the guitar. The ending in not always heard (for unknown reasons) but this is the original ending.

O Magnum mysterium - Giovanni Gabrieli (1557 - 1612) Latin text with
Gabrieli's O magnum mysterium consistently and classically counterpoises two contrasting vocal choirs while maintaining its elegant proportions. Gabrieli divides his text, which celebrates the lowliness of Christ's birth on Christmas, into three unequal parts; each receives a musical section of roughly equal length. The opening phrase, "O great mystery," is sung three times: once by the first choir, once by the slightly lower second choir, and a third time in climactic full polyphony. The second phrase of text, which explains that the great mystery and "wondrous sacrament" allowed mere animals to see the birth of the Saviour, takes the same tripartite structure, with a temporal broadening into triple rhythmic groups. The composer packs the most text into the third section, which extols the manger and the blessed Virgin; twice Gabrieli cycles the contrasted vocal choirs, once aspirantly starting with the lower ensemble and rising to the heights. The choral antiphony becomes thus not only a vehicle for grand effect, but also serves to articulate the very structure of the text and to embody its sense. The radiant conclusion of his motet comes in a fourth section, an extended jubilant "alleluia." A series of syncopated, triple-meter antiphonal statements gradually gives way to a broad, eight-voiced tutti. Whether the two choirs braved the logistical challenges of physical separation or merely sang in proximate alternation, the effect added great luster to the Venetian liturgy.

We took our cameras with us and a new tune that we created just for the occasion. Thanks to a number of subscribers for the suggestion to remake this epic classical piece by Carl Orff! It was one of three possibilities we were considering when writing with the race track in mind. In the end it was no contest; especially when we read the English transition of the Latin lyrics in the piece -- which speak of fate like a "wheel" and a "driving force!" Our version of O Fortuna was so much fun to create that it was done in a matter of three days (we couldn't let ourselves do anything else until it was finished). It consists of 6 piano tracks, 43 acoustic cello tracks, 3 percussion tracks, and 48 vocal tracks. A special thanks to Orin Harker (He owns the white car) , along with his wife Val, who hosted us, gave us all the ride of our lives, and taught us about the coolness of Radical Racing! They definitely went the "extra mile <b>...</b>

This is because of the number of children and noise in the theater. It seemed to be the best way to accomplish a good recording, however, it does often sound like you are directly next to the guitar. Also hear this great piece by Pepe Romaro, Christopher Parkening, John Williams, and Julian Bream.

Robert Schumann - Dichterliebe, Op. 48 Pt 1-4 Fischer-Dieskau Salzbu
I received a kind request (thank you!) to upload some of this performance of Dichterliebe and decided that this would be a perfect presentation to honor Fischer-Dieskau's 84th birthday on May 28. This performance comes from Fischer-Dieskau's debut solo recital at the Salzburg Festival on August 13, 1956. His partner at the piano is Gerald Moore. "Dichterliebe", 'The Poet's Love' (composed 1840), is the best-known song cycle of Robert Schumann (Op. 48). The texts for the 16 songs come from the "Lyrisches Intermezzo" of Heinrich Heine, composed 1822-1823, published as part of the poet's "Das Buch der Lieder". The very natural, almost hyper-sensitive poetical affections of the poems are beautifully mirrored in Schumann's settings, with their miniaturist chromaticism and suspensions. The poet's love is a hothouse of nuanced responses to the delicate language of flowers, dreams and fairy-tales. Schumann adapts the words of the poems to his needs for the songs, sometimes repeating phrases and often rewording a line to supply the desired cadence. Notes from Wikipedia.
