Donal Fox's jazz plays upon many traditions <br /><br />"Fox's band has the Modern Jazz Quartet's poise <br />and John Coltrane Quartet's power" <br /><br />Composer/pianist Donal Fox has forged a unique amalgam of jazz, Latin American, and classical music. Past projects have focused on Johann Sebastian Bach, but the centerpiece of Saturday night's Regattabar performance was a jazz suite incorporating the music of Domenico Scarlatti . <br /><br />Fox was accompanied by vibraphonist Stefon Harris, bassist John Lockwood , and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. This instrumentation inevitably brings the Modern Jazz Quartet to mind, but Fox's band married that group's cool poise with the power and momentum of the John Coltrane Quartet. <br /><br />The opening number was based on an Astor Piazzolla tango. Rather than presenting the usual string of solos, piano and vibraphone engaged in a fluid, improvisatory dialogue. Lockwood and Carrington's bass and drums provided active but essentially supportive background for the friendly jousting of Fox and Harris. <br /><br />The second number was Fox's ``Inventions in Blue," which drew from Bach's Two-Part Invention No. 4 in D Minor. It began as a rapid, African-sounding vamp, spelled by lyrical piano chords that floated over the pulsating rhythm. Ouverture Solennelle, L'Année 1812, Op. 49 (Festival Overture, The Year 1812) (Russian: Торжественная увертюра 1812 года, Toržestvennaja uvertjura 1812 goda), better known as the 1812 Overture, is a classical opus written by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The piece was written to commemorate Russia's defense of Moscow against Napoleon's advancing Grande Armée at the Battle of Borodino in 1812. The Overture debuted in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow on August 20, 1882 (in the Gregorian or NS calendar; the date in the Julian or OS calendar was 8 August). The overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire and ringing chimes. While this piece has no historical connection with United States history, it is often a staple at Fourth of July celebrations. Remember, Remember the 5th of November

By most measures, he was nondescript: a youngish white man in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a Washington Nationals baseball cap. From a small case, he removed a violin. Placing the open case at his feet, he shrewdly threw in a few dollars and pocket change as seed money, swiveled it to face pedestrian traffic, and began to play.
It was 7:51 a.m. on Friday, January 12, the middle of the morning rush hour. In the next 43 minutes, as the violinist performed six classical pieces, 1,097 people passed by. Almost all of them were on the way to work, which meant, for almost all of them, a government job. L'Enfant Plaza is at the nucleus of federal Washington, and these were mostly mid-level bureaucrats with those indeterminate, oddly fungible titles: policy analyst, project manager, budget officer, specialist, facilitator, consultant.

Classically trained, Umi made headlines all over the world after appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show and wowing audiences; she's played concerts in places like Steinway Hall in New York City and with amazing people like those of the Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra, all in the last 3 years of her admittedly long life. Indeed, it's not hard to see why Umi Garrett is truly an inspiration to us all.

"Summertime" is a track from the album "Porgy and Bess" by jazz trumpet musician Miles Davis, released in 1958 on Columbia Records. The album features arrangements by Davis and collaborator Gil Evans from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. The album was recorded in four sessions on July 22, July 29, August 4 and August 18 in 1958 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City. It is the second collaboration between Davis and Evans and has garnered much critical acclaim since its release, being acknowledged by music critics as the best of their collaborations. For many jazz critics, Porgy and Bess is regarded as historic. In 1958, Davis was one of many jazz musicians growing dissatisfied with bebop, seeing its increasingly complex chord changes as hindering creativity. Five years earlier, in 1953, pianist George Russell published his Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, which offered an alternative to the practice of improvisation based on chords. Abandoning the traditional major and minor key relationships of Western music, Russell developed a new formulation using scales or a series of scales for improvisations. Russell's approach to improvisation came to be known as modal in jazz. "The Elixir of Love" at Virginia Opera (2008)
Virginia Opera invites audiences to toast the holidays and fall head-over-heels for Gaetano Donizetti's romantic comedy "The Elixir of Love", coming to the stage in nine romping performances from Nov. 14 through Dec. 6 in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax, Va. Last staged here in 1998, "The Elixir of Love" is the classic love potion story, with a comic twist. In the Italian countryside, the young farmer Nemorino drinks a "magical" elixir in the hope it will help him win the love of Adina, the prettiest girl in town. Little does he know the potion, sold to him by a quack doctor, is little more than ordinary red wine. Soprano Jane Redding makes a delightful return to Virginia Opera's stage as Adina, having earned high praise from critics for previous comedic roles here, including Poppea in "Agrippina" (2007) and Susanna in "The Marriage of Figaro" (2006). Making their company debuts are tenor Joshua Kohl as the love struck farmer Nemorino and baritone Stephen Hartley as the debonair Sergeant Belcore. The cast of five is topped off by returning bass-baritone Todd Robinson as the traveling cure-all salesman, Dr. Dulcamara, and soprano Allison Pohl as Gianetta. Mr. Robinson virtually stole the show with his moving aria as Prince Gremin in "Eugene Onegin" earlier this year, and Ms. Pohl is an exciting talent who last season was a member of the company's Spectrum Resident Artist program for young artists. Through the use of canon and fugue in the second and particularly third movements, he was proud of his fusion of "horizontal" and "vertical" methods of composition. Lasalle Quartet performs.
