  • A child prodigy and rare musical genius, Mozart was composing by age five.  His first symphony was written when he was eight, his first mass at twelve, and he had completed an opera by the time he was fourteen.

  • Mozart's father, Leopold, was also a composer and a well-known violin teacher.

  • Mozart's sister, Maria Anna, was also a child prodigy. Their father arranged an extremely successful tour for the two children; they amazed audiences all over Europe.

  • Mozart liked to imitate cats. While rehearsing an opera with his singers, he’d suddenly grow bored and leap over tables and chairs, meowing and turning somersaults. 

  • Mozart could listen to music just once, then transcribe it from memory without any mistakes.

  • Never a strong person, Mozart's childhood illnesses left him small, pale and delicate.

  • Mozart composed over 600 works; among them are 41 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, 5 violin concertos, 27 concert arias, 23 string quartets, 18 masses, and 22 operas.

  • Though he was one of the greatest musicians of his generation and became the most well-known composer in Europe, Mozart spent most of his life searching for a job.

  • Mozart was left-handed.

  • A lover of wordplay, Mozart created nicknames for his friends: Countess Makewater, Princess Dunghill, and Prince Potbelly von Pigtail, just to name a few.

  • The fifth movement from Mozart's famous Eine Kleine Nachtmusik did not survive.

  • Mozart and his wife had six children, though only two survived infancy.

  • Mozart had several pets, including a dog, a starling, a canary, and a horse.

  • Some experts believe that Mozart suffered from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

  • Mozart was an extravagant spender, and loved elegant clothes.

  • The Magic Flute was Mozart's last opera.

  • Mozart died when he was just 35. Though there are many speculations, the cause of his death remains unknown.
