  • Scarlatti's father, Alessandro, was a well-known composer in his day.
  • Scarlatti wrote 555 keyboard sonatas.

  • Much of Scarlatti's life was spent in the service of Spanish and Portuguese royalty.

  • Scarlatti was one of the few composers of the Baroque period to begin the transition to classical music.

  • In a good-natured trial of skill when both composers were twenty-three, Scarlatti was judged superior to Handel on the harpsichord, though Handel was better on the organ.

  • Scarlatti had nine children; many of his descendants still live in Madrid today.
