French Opera - The Classical Tradition 8: Fauré - Pénélope


Régine Crespin and Raoul Jobin sing their hearts out in this 1956 live recording of the finale of Pénélope, the beautiful opera by Gabriel Fauré. Odysseus has just killed the suitors of his faithful wife Penelope, who has been waiting for his return for 20 years. The couple are jubilant at their new found marital bliss. This opera is only seldom performed or recorded. Excerpts exist with legendary singers such as Germaine Cernay, there are live recordings with the wonderful Régine Crespin/Raoul Jobin and Josephine Veasey/Andre Turp in the leading roles, while Jessye Norman and Alain Vanzo sing Pénélope and Ulysse in a studio recording on the Erato label.
