As such, it has become a holiday classic in the Western world, sung by artists as diverse as Bing Crosby and Luciano Pavarotti. Its origins, however, were not liturgical. The original, in German, was a translation of part of Sir Walter Scott's "The Lady of the Lake." A prayer, to be sure, but an improvised one, spoken from the heart by a maiden in need of divine intervention.
