Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995) is considered one of the most exceptional piano virtuosos of the 20th century, alongside Horowitz and Richter. He began music lessons at age three, focusing on the piano after initially starting on the violin. Michelangeli’s international career started at age 18 when he placed seventh in the Ysaÿe International Festival in Brussels. Though his performance was deemed unsatisfactory by some, his impeccable technique was already evident.
