Emil Gilels, a talented Soviet pianist, was born in Odessa, Ukraine. Widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, he began studying piano at the age of five under Yakov Tkach. Gilels made his public debut at 12 and went on to have a successful career. His last name is sometimes spelled Hilels. A recording of Brahms’ Ballade Op.10 No. 1 in D minor performed by Gilels on December 27, 1977 in Moscow is available.
