Gabriel Fauré’s “Les Berceaux” is a musical composition performed by Janet Baker (mezzo-soprano) and Geoffrey Parsons (piano). The poem, written by Suily Prudhomme, tells the story of how great ships along the quay pay no attention to the cradles being rocked by women. However, the day will come when farewells are necessary, and men are tempted to explore distant horizons. On that day, the ships feel their movement restrained by the longing of the distant cradles.
