In 1822, Gaetano Donizetti traveled to Naples with a letter of credence from his teacher, Simone Mayr. The Neapolitan city was still dominated by Rossini’s operas, and Domenico Barbaja was the director of the Theatro San Carlo. Donizetti’s opera “La zingara” had been well-received, and six weeks later, his single-act opera “La lettera anonima” premiered at the Teatro del Fondo, securing his promising future. The opera tells a confused story involving a widow named Melita, Rosina, the granddaughter of the Count, and Filinto, a marine captain whom Melita secretly loves.
