QYO2, the Second Queensland Youth Orchestra, conducted by Sergei V Korschmin, performs Bedřich Smetana’s Ma Vlast, Movement 3, Šárka, My Fatherland in a lunchtime concert at Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music on June 27, 2010. About the composer…

Bedřich Smetana was born in Bohemia in 1824. Smetana showed his musical talent from a young age. He began his career as a pianist and later became interested in composition.

Smetana’s musical career was marked by his strong connection to his homeland. He played an instrumental role in the development of Czech national music and was considered one of the pioneers of Czech opera. His compositions were deeply influenced by Czech folklore and history, and he often incorporated traditional melodies and themes into his works.

Some of Smetana’s most famous works include “The Bartered Bride,” an opera that became a symbol of Czech national identity, and “Ma Vlast,” a symphonic poem cycle that depicts various aspects of Czech history and landscapes. These compositions showcase Smetana’s ability to evoke emotions through his music and his mastery of orchestration.
