Emil Gilels, a renowned Soviet pianist, was born in Odessa, Ukraine on October 19, 1916. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Gilels began studying the piano at the age of five under Yakov Tkach, who was a student of Raoul Pugno and Alexander Villoing. Gilels credited his strict training with establishing the foundation of his technique. His last name is sometimes spelled as Hilels.
