Virginia Opera presents “The Elixir of Love”, a romantic comedy by Gaetano Donizetti. The show will run from Nov. 14 to Dec. 6 in Norfolk, Richmond, and Fairfax, VA. The story follows Nemorino, a young farmer who drinks a love potion in hopes of winning over Adina. However, the potion is just ordinary red wine sold by a quack doctor. Soprano Jane Redding returns to Virginia Opera as Adina, alongside tenor Joshua Kohl in his debut as the farmer.


About the composer…

Gaetano Donizetti, a prominent composer of classical music, was born in 1797 in Bergamo, Italy. He showed an early talent for music and began studying at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna at the age of nine. Donizetti’s musical career flourished as he gained recognition for his operas, which became highly popular during the early 19th century. His works, characterized by their melodic richness and emotional depth, contributed greatly to the bel canto style of opera.

Donizetti composed over 70 operas throughout his life, including notable works such as “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “L’elisir d’amore,” and “Don Pasquale.” His compositions often showcased his ability to create expressive melodies and capture the emotional essence of the characters. In addition to his operas, Donizetti also composed chamber music, symphonies, and choral works.

Despite his success as a composer, Donizetti faced personal challenges, including bouts of mental illness and financial difficulties. However, he continued to compose prolifically until his death in 1848. His contributions to the world of classical music have left a lasting impact, with his operas continuing to be performed and celebrated today. Gaetano Donizetti’s legacy as a composer is a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft.
