The mini-series of uploads from Wallberg’s recordings of Donizetti’s two great buffo operas continues! Adina and Nemorino surprisingly don’t have a suspended-over-time love duet. Their first number together has Adina poking fun at Nemorino’s sentimental outpourings. In their second duet, both characters are angry and confused. Only in Adina’s aria, specifically its cabaletta, do we get close to the traditional love scene. The first duet is unconventional, skipping the central andante and diving into an impassioned but slow-moving stretta. The music is touching.
About the composer…

Donizetti composed over 70 operas throughout his life, including notable works such as “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “L’elisir d’amore,” and “Don Pasquale.” His compositions often showcased his ability to create expressive melodies and capture the emotional essence of the characters. In addition to his operas, Donizetti also composed chamber music, symphonies, and choral works.
Despite his success as a composer, Donizetti faced personal challenges, including bouts of mental illness and financial difficulties. However, he continued to compose prolifically until his death in 1848. His contributions to the world of classical music have left a lasting impact, with his operas continuing to be performed and celebrated today. Gaetano Donizetti’s legacy as a composer is a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft.
